Rounds seven and eight of the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series took place in historic Deadwood, S.D. at the famed Days of ‘76 Rodeo Grounds. This event provides a beautiful backdrop for racing with the Black Hills in plain sight and a vibrant downtown just across the street. The paperclip shaped track was tight, but it held good rhythm and had plenty of snow despite the unseasonably warm weather that moved into the area.
Friday started off with the always exciting Pro Lite class where Team Bauerly rider Marcus Ogemar ( 58 Engcon/Ski-doo), and Kevin Wallenstein ( 122 Central Hydraulics/Ski-doo) ran for the team. The boys looked good in the practice sessions and the crew made some minor adjustments before the rounds started for the day. In round one Marcus got off to a great start and was charging hard, but it was short lived after a nasty off due to a mechanical issue caused by casing a landing hard on the back-stretch, ending with an eighth and a trip to the medics to be checked out further. Kevin charged hard to a 3/2 set of finishes in his two rounds of qualifying which put him as the fourth qualifier on the front row of the final. In the final late Friday night Kevin shot off the line and challenged for the lead right from the start. As the laps wore on and the track became more and more challenging, Kevin kept pushing and landed himself on the podium with a solid second place overall finish!
Day two brought the team back to the track for another beautiful day in the Black Hills. This time Kurt Bauerly ( 318 Fly Racing/Ski-doo) and Paul Bauerly ( 24 Digital Ink/Ski-doo) started things off for the team in the Pro Plus 30 class. In round one Paul grabbed the lead early with Kurt in 2nd, they would cross the line in that order. Round two saw both grab good starts again, but this time it was Kurt who pulled out to the lead for the win with Paul in second. They qualified with the top two spots on the line for the finals. In the final, Paul launched off the line and into the lead early and Kurt battled hard inside the top three. Midway through the race they started running into lapped traffic which becomes tricky to navigate on such a tight rough course but they both pushed hard to the finish where Paul crossed in first, and Kurt came in close behind with a second place overall.
Next up for the evening show was the Pro Lite class which started off well again as Kevin set the fastest lap of the Pro Lite class in his rounds of qualifying where he pulled in a 3/2 set of finishes that qualified him third on the front row of the final to be run later in the night. Marcus came out to take the start in each of his rounds for a 9/9 set of finishes, but didn’t run from there after getting beat up a bit in the Friday incident he had. He will be back soon though, so our thoughts and support are with him as he works back up to full speed. The Pro Lite final which ran in front of a sold out crowd in Deadwood, brought a ton of action for the fans. Kevin again shot off the line and made it through the first lap clean and challenged up front. There were crashes and pileups to deal with throughout the race but he kept his pace, chose clean lines, and charged his way to another well-deserved second place podium finish on the weekend.
It was an awesome weekend to be outdoors in South Dakota. There was some great racing action in front of a packed house, and the results were great for the team with four podium finishes and some nice advances in the season points chase!
